Welcome from the Department Chair

Welcome to the Department of Arts and Humanities website, where you can learn more about our innovative programs, meet our community of dedicated teacher-scholars and staff, and hear from our alumni. Our department supports six academic degree majors as well as two minors, including traditional and interdisciplinary programs, three secondary teacher certification programs, and one graduate program. We also support two co-curricular programs, Student Media and the Writing Center, where our faculty collaborate with Student Affairs to provide our students with hands-on professional learning experiences that also provide necessary student services across the university.

The department’s broader objectives include: (1) the development of our students’ academic and professional skills through formal teaching by tenured and tenure-track faculty at all levels of the curriculum; (2) training students in the skills of research, analytical reasoning, and effective communication; and, (3) contributing, through faculty and student research, and cooperative partnerships,  to the university’s mission to enrich the economic and social development of the community and region.

We’re delighted that you are taking the time to learn more about us and our programs. The Department of Arts and Humanities currently offers degree programs in Communications/Journalism, English, History, and interdisciplinary minors in Borderlands Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. Our programs offer opportunities to pursue a variety of career paths and explore intellectual and creative frontiers of learning.
