Program Overview

The Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in Accounting and prepare professional accountants to obtain high-level positions in accounting firms and business enterprises.  Texas A&M University-San Antonio is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award master’s degrees. 

Master of Professional Accounting Degree Requirements

The MPA program requires a student to successfully complete 30 credit hours of graduate business courses excluding any prerequisite requirements. The program consists of 15 credit hours of required graduate accounting courses, 6 credit hours of required business  courses, and  9 credit hours of graduate accounting electives.

  • ACCT 5314 Advanced Accounting Problems
  • ACCT 5316 Advanced Income Tax Problems
  • ACCT 5327 Advanced Auditing
  • ACCT 5341 Advanced Cost/Managerial Accounting

Required Graduate Business Courses (6 hrs)

  • CISA 5309 Computer Technology & Its Applications
  • MGMT 5335 Advanced Business Policy*

*Must be taken during the last semester of the MPA program

Accounting Elective Requirement (9 hrs)

Students are required to successfully complete 9 semester credit hours of graduate accounting or taxation electives. 
Please note: ACCT 5311 may not be taken for credit to satisfy the Accounting elective requirement.

Course Instructional Format

The majority of the accounting courses are offered Monday through Thursday in the evening (one or two are occasionally held on Saturday).  The instructional formats of the courses require meeting once a week for either 1 hour and 15 minutes or for 2 hours and 45 minutes.  The CISA and MGMT business courses are also offered in hyflex format (16-week sessions with video recorded lectures which allow students the choice to attend class for 1 hour and 15 minutes or watch the lecture online streaming or recorded—most professors will require exams to be taken in class).


Prerequisite Requirements

The MPA program requires that all entering students have the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.  Students who do not have a degree in Accounting will be required to successfully complete prerequisites before applying to the program.  Prerequisite requirements include successful completion of 18 semester credit hours of advanced accounting courses (beyond Principles of Financial and Managerial Accounting and the intermediates), Computer Information Systems, Business Communications, Business Law for Accountants in addition to the business prerequisites required for the MBA program.  For more information regarding the program prerequisites please contact the College of Business Graduate Advisor.

Admission Requirements

A student must be admitted to the College of Graduate Studies and to a specific program in order to take graduate level courses. The MPA Admissions Committee requires applicants to have a minimum undergraduate cumulative/overall GPA of 2.6 or higher or a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last sixty hours of coursework completed for the bachelor’s degree in order to be eligible to receive a one semester waiver of submitting their GMAT scores.  A satisfactory GMAT score must be submitted before continuing in the program.  Applicants who do not meet the GPA requirement must submit a satisfactory GMAT score with the application in order for the application to be processed for admission.  Prerequisite requirements must be met before applying to the MPA program.  Please note: International applicants with an F -1 visa must submit a satisfactory GMAT and TOEFL score in order to be considered for admission.

GMAT Requirement

The MPA Admissions Committee uses the following formula to determine an applicant’s minimum GMAT score requirement 970-(GPA X 200) = minimum required GMAT score.  The GPA used in the formula is the students undergraduate cumulative/overall, which consists of all courses completed while pursuing a bachelor’s degree.  Applicants who have earned a graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution will be exempt from the GMAT requirement.
