SAN ANTONIO (June 25, 2018)—Sandra Cisneros, acclaimed writer, MacArthur Fellow and author of “The House on Mango Street,” will read from new and selected works in a fundraiser for the Macondo Writers Workshop on Friday, July 27. John Phillip Santos, acclaimed filmmaker, author and the first Mexican-American Rhodes Scholar, will introduce Cisneros at the event, which will take place from 7-9 p.m. in the Auditorium at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA). The address is One University Way, San Antonio, Texas 78224. Suggested donation is $20. (No one will be turned away for lack of funds.) Books will be sold (credit card purchases only) and signed by Cisneros at the event.
About Macondo Writers Workshop
Cisneros returns to San Antonio to support Macondo, which she founded in 1995. Begun as a small class of 12 students sitting around her kitchen table, Macondo gathers writers from all genres who work on geographic, cultural, economic, gender and spiritual borders. The program, named after the town in Gabriel García Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude", is an association of socially-engaged writers working toward non-violent social change. They seek to advance creativity, foster generosity, and serve community. Since its inception 23 years ago, Macondo has grown and transformed the lives of many of its past participants—about 300 writers. These participants, affectionately known as Macondistas, are now highly regarded writers, teachers and activists.
Macondo’s success is largely due to the commitment of Cisneros, a literary champion who has worked tirelessly to foster new voices—voices often overlooked by the established literary world. In addition to the cultural and literary partners of the greater San Antonio community, Macondo has also relied on the commitment of its previous participants—many who return as teachers and volunteers each summer.
This Year’s Workshop
This 2018 workshop will bring 34 writers to the A&M-SA campus from July 24-29. Macondo historically brings award-winning faculty to teach. This summer is no exception. Reyna Grande, Allison Hedge Coke and Stephanie Elizondo Griest will teach the Fiction, Poetry and Nonfiction classes to the 2018 group of writers. The faculty dedicate themselves to promoting excellence while fostering the mission of the Macondo Writers Workshop. They will also be conducting a reading on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at the San Antonio Central Library, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Latino Collection Resource Center. The library is located at 600 Soledad Street. This event is free and open to the public. Books will be sold by the Twig Bookshop at this event.
Open Mic for Macondo Participants on July 26
Lastly, an Open Mic featuring the 2018 Macondo participants—master writers from all over the country—will take place at Viva Taco Land on Thursday July 26, 8-10 pm. The address is: 103 W GRAYSON ST SAN ANTONIO, TX 78212 (210) 368-2443. For more information, please visit: http://www.vivatacoland.com/
