I. Application Deadlines

To be considered for the SC&WS Internship Program you must submit all materials by the specific deadline per semester you are applying.

Fall Intership Applicants: July 15
Spring Internship Application: November 15
Summer Internship Applicants: April 15

II. How to Apply

The SC&WS internship program is open only to students who are enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral program. Please note, this is an unpaid internship opportunity. All interested applicants must email the below materials to StuCounseling@tamusa.edu. Required materials include:

III. Requirements:
Orientation: All practicum trainees and interns are required to complete an orientation program prior to the beginning of the semester in which the practicum/internship is to take place. Completion of the orientation program likely will require between 20 and 35 hours. The amount of time required is based in part on each trainee’s prior counseling experience, completed coursework, and progress during orientation.
Required Days and Times: Fridays 9am-12pm for Case Consultation and In-service Training

Duration of Placement: Trainees should expect to be on-site a total of 16-18 weeks


IV. Training Philosophy Statement:

The staff in Student Counseling and Wellness (SC&WS) is deeply committed, professionally and ethically, to the fields of counseling, social work, and psychology. An essential outgrowth of this professional identification is a strong commitment to the preparation of skilled counselors, social workers, and psychologists. Student Counseling and Wellness Services advocates a practitioner-scholar model of training in which trainees of all levels are expected to think critically and utilize current research in the provision of mental health services. The training of students occurs within an environment which recognizes the unique developmental needs of each individual as well as the professional identity of the discipline in which the student is being trained (e.g., counseling, social work, and psychology).

While the majority of training occurs in the context of supervision, consultation, and service delivery, trainees also participate in in-service training, case consultations, and other professional activities in order to complement their training and help prepare them for entry-level positions as mental health service providers. Because the staff believes that personal development and maturity are cornerstones of professional competence and identity, every effort is made to provide a supportive environment that will model and attend to personal growth.

Student Counseling and Wellness Services provides a wide range of mental health services to a diverse clientele, making it an excellent setting for the practical training of counselors, social workers, and psychologists. To benefit from this experience, the trainee must possess adequate skills in the professions of counseling, social work, or psychology and be prepared to integrate the theoretical and applied aspects of the science and art of the profession(s). This collaborative atmosphere is an essential trademark of the center’s philosophy of training. The entire professional and support staff endeavor to make the trainees feel that they are members of this professional team.


V. Overview of Training Programs

Training of practicum students/interns takes place during the fall, spring, and summer semesters in the Student Counseling Services offices during the hours that the office is regularly open. Other than the orientation described in the requirements, trainees are only required to be on site during the times that Texas A&M-San Antonio is in session. However, it may be possible for trainees to be on site between semesters, as well.
