• 2nd Annual Regional Science OlympiadThe Biology program along with the Biology club hosted the 2nd annual Regional Science Olympiad at the main campus on March 23rd, 2013. The Science Olympiad is a series of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) based event in which middle school and high school students from the region compete to earn a spot in the State Competition at Texas A&M University in College Station. This year we had 8 middle school teams and 9 high school teams for a total of over 200 students. Look for this event again next year!
• Biology students will attend Southwestern Association of Parasitologists Conference – April 2013Five Biology majors, Yvette Rodriguez, Amalia Ochoa, Theo Judd, Jennifer Fitzgerald, and Haley Willhelm will accompany Dr. Wise de Valdez to the 3-day Southwestern Association of Parasitologists Conference (SWAP) at the University of Oklahoma Biology Station near Lake Texoma, OK. At this conference the students will attend scientific presentations by fellow undergraduates and graduates in Parasitology from other Universities. One of our recent graduates, Troy Leupke, who will be attending graduate school at Texas A&M will be presenting his research on Chagas Disease at Lackland Base in San Antonio.
• Texas A & M University Student SymposiumFours biology students, Yvette Rodriguez, Maria Montecillo, Maricela Limon, and M. Frances Callihan who have been reviewing scientific literature in three upper-division courses, Parasitology, Biology of Disease Vectors, and Biostatistics will be presenting their findings at the Annual Student Symposium to be held May 3rd, 2013.
• Biology student will present poster at the Texas A&M University- Kingsville 1ST Annual Regional Javelina Research Symposium - April 18-2013. Biology student, Cody Brietzke, will be presenting a poster on research he conducted with Dr. Dean Wiemer as advisor and sponsored by Dr. Rodolfo Valdez. Cody Brietzke will be presenting results from a study on the Texas A&M University- San Antonio Main campus feral hog population using remote sensing cameras.
