Occupational Health Program

The Texas A&M University-San Antonio Occupational Health Program (OHP) provides occupational health services to personnel at risk of exposure to research animals or infectious biohazards (in BSL-2 labs) in the course of their participation in IBC or IACUC permitted research or teaching.

The OHP provides eligible participants with access to educational resources, occupational health services, and to an occupational health provider. Specifically, the OHP addresses exposure to the following:

  • Biohazardous materials handled in IBC permitted research or teaching laboratories at BSL-2 including:

    1. Human pathogens or zoonotic pathogens of animals;

    2. Materials potentially containing human pathogens (e.g. human or non-human primate blood, body fluids, unfixed tissues, or cell lines- including commercially available lines);

    3. Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules and cells, organisms, and viruses containing such molecules; and

  • Animals, or their tissues, body fluids, or wastes.
    For all chemical or physical hazard exposures, please contact A&M-SA RA-EHS

    Enrolling in the Biosafety Occupational Health Program

    To begin the enrollment process, please contact A&M-SA RA-EHS to obtain access to the online enrollment questionnaire (initial), vpantusa@tamusa.edu. Please include the PI of the approved IBC and/or IACUC protocols and the protocol title and number that you will be working on.

    Completion of an annual questionnaire will be required as long as exposures to biohazardous materials and/or animals continues.

    If you have any issues completing your questionnaire, please contact: vpantusa@tamusa.edu.
