Dear Members of the A&M-San Antonio Community,
Spring 2019 Commencement
Spring Commencement on Friday, May 17, was indeed a special day. We celebrated our largest graduating class, welcoming 945 new alumni to our ranks. I am proud of our graduates and of all that we have accomplished together in our first decade as a standalone institution.
Several key figures in A&M-SA's history were in attendance as our special guests, including Mr. Greg Garcia, who on May 13 was awarded the University's inaugural Meritorious Service Award, and Mr. Harold Oliver, who was awarded an honorary doctorate at the ceremony. Both were honored for their critical roles in the establishment of A&M-SA. It was also exciting to have newly selected Chairman of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, Elaine Mendoza, present with us on the very day she was announced as Chairman! She has long been a passionate advocate for higher education and for A&M-SA in particular, and her leadership on the Board of Regents is sure to be outstanding.
At both Commencement and at our 10-year anniversary celebration on campus on May 13, you heard a lot about the late Senator Madla and his commitments to underserved communities, to access and equity, and to the notion that higher education holds transformative power. I believe he would be very proud of the university that we are today and would recognize in us strong commitments to those same ideals.
My Genuine Gratitude
You all unselfishly contribute your time, energy and talents in amazing ways. I am inspired daily by the wonderful work that you all do on behalf of our students and this institution and I am genuinely grateful.
I want to acknowledge specifically the many of you who collaborated to ensure that the spring 2019 Commencement was not just our biggest, but also our best yet. I deeply appreciate the efforts of the Office of the Registrar, Disability Support Services, the University Police Department, Marketing & Communications, Alumni Affairs, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Military Affairs, and the many of you from across the campus who volunteered your time planning and staffing the event. You helped make it a truly special day for our graduates and their families.
Please Join Us
With all that we have accomplished this spring, we have all certainly earned a little time for respite. Though I know it's the season for vacations, I do hope to see many of you at our second annual Employee Development Day on June 5. Open to all full-time staff and faculty, the event will include professional development presentations, lunch and fun activities throughout day.
In the meantime, congratulations on an awesome 2018-2019 academic year!
