A&M-SA lands first national Well Work Place Award!

The A&M-SA, Jaguar Strong-Get Fit wellness program received the national Well Work Place Silver Award for 2020! The Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) recognizes organizations that have used the patented 7 Benchmarks model to help build and shape their wellness program. A&M-SA was the only organization in Texas to receive this stellar award and only one in eighteen nationwide. This is a huge win for our university, as we stand tall in the midst of a pandemic as an organization that enhances the health and well-being of our faculty and staff.

Thanks to our Jaguar Strong – Get Fit Wellness Team for leading us to reach this recognition – Francy Leal, Martha Gonzalez, Jackie Jaso and Erin Sanchez. Go Jaguars!

The Jaguar Fall Walkers helped me stay accountable to my health and well-being at the same time connecting me in with the community and culture on campus without actually being on campus during these times. I felt a part of the team and enjoyed the guest speakers, tips and conversations in the weekly meetings. Really, thank you again for making this happen!

This was my first time to participate in the Fall Walkers Challenge and I enjoyed all six weeks!! Not only did I benefit by being accountable by logging my activity through the convenient QR Form to reach my personal goals but I also benefited from the weekly Lets Pivot Chat Room sessions. Hats off to the various guest speakers who showed their support for Fall Walkers Lets Pivot Chats by giving up time from their schedules to share their knowledge in their specific fields during these sessions. The information these various coaches, trainers and coordinators volunteered confirmed that each of them take pride in what they do for the success of our sports programs here at Texas A&M-San Antonio! GO JAGS!

At the start of the Work From Home orders it was very easy to snack and munch all day because I was stuck inside. When the Stay Fit Bingo competition started it helped me become accountable of my eating and exercise habits. I was able to restrict the amounts of sugar and carbs I was eating, the bingo reminded to me take a break and breathe, and reminded me to be mindful of the foods I was consuming. I replaced a meal a day with a salad and cut out all sodas. I incorporated more exercise and movement into my day by using my lunch break to either run or walk a mile on my treadmill. It became my daily lunch goal. I have lost 10 lbs since the work from home orders were put into place and have kicked some of my bad habits! The bingo really helped remind me to be mindful of more moving more and eating better.

I have been with the university for about a year. After a baby in July 2019 and starting a new position, I feel like I packed on the pounds and most of my activity occurred at work during the preparation and execution of events. With COVID-19, I became even less active. I saw the Fall Walkers program and decided to take an active step for myself and reignite my competitive spirit. I am intentional about my three times a week and sometimes get additional time on the weekend. The program has also encouraged me to nudge my husband and be a positive voice to others who might feel stuck. Because of Fall Walkers I am working on a 30 days full body workout with a colleague. I’m excited to continue and appreciate myself for FINALLY giving myself some love. Nutrition is another big area that I am slowly changing for the better. Thank you to the Wellness Program for giving me a recalibration and jumpstarting my engine. Hoping to shed a few pounds in the process.

I am always excited to check out and participate in new events that the Wellness Program puts on. Each event has increased my overall wellbeing and has provided information that I can use in each area of my life (fitness, finance, nutrition, etc.). Fitness and Finance events have made the biggest impact for me. I am better able to keep a healthy lifestyle and explore/improve my finances from the information I learn.

Many times you hear about the wellness events happening on campus.  And many times you think of all the reasons on why you are so busy you just can’t be part of something. The campaigns aim to create a healthy campus, which is no easy feat, yet our Wellness Program creates fun and challenging ways to do so.  What started as a mental challenge for me to feel accomplished turned into a whole change of my routine. I’ve come closer to family, more invested in my wellbeing, excited to chat to co-workers and thankful for positive change.  Participating in the Wellness Program has really been an amazing experience for me.
