Summary of Employee’s Benefits 

Following is a summary of the benefits currently offered by Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMU-SA) for Exempt and Non-Exempt full-time employees.  Part-time employees are eligible for certain benefits on a pro-rated basis. Please call Human Resource if you have any questions.

INSURANCE OPTIONS
Employees can choose from a variety of programs offered by TAMUS.  The Medical plan is A&M Care -BCBSTX (PPO) and Graduate Student Health Plan (PPO).  Medical plans include prescription coverage with Express Scripts.

Other optional group insurance plans include Dental coverage (PPO and HMO), Vision coverage, Life Insurance coverage, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Long Term Disability program, Flexible Spending Account and Long Term Care plan.    Employees may select different effective dates for coverage for medical and optional plans.  State contribution is effective the 1st of the month following 60 days of employment. Or immediately select medical coverage effective date on your first day of employment with TAMU-SA without the state contribution. 

RETIREMENT
Our principal retirement plan is the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS). Some employees may be eligible to elect the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) in lieu of TRS based on their appointment to certain job titles. Members enrolled in TRS contribute 6.7% of their annual salary to the TRS.  The university contributes 6.8% of the member's annual salary to the member's retirement plan.
Members enrolled in ORP contribute 6.65% of their annual salary to the ORP.  The university contributes 6.6% of the member’s annual salary to the member’s retirement plan.  

VOLUNTARY PLANS/ DISCOUNT PROGRAMS
All employees are eligible to participate in any of the Voluntary Plans currently available through Texas A&M University System.  Tax-Deferred Account Program (TDA), Texa$aver Deferred Compensation Plan (DCP). Contributions options can be either pre- or post-tax and are payroll deduct.  Discount programs are available through Marsh Voluntary Benefits.

SICK LEAVE, VACATION, AND HOLIDAY
Depending on employment classifications, employees are able to accrue time off for personal illness and vacation. Employees celebrate thirteen paid holidays throughout the calendar year.

MILITARY LEAVE
Employees serving as members of the state or federal military forces are entitled to leave with pay for active duty or military training for up to 15 days annually.  Employees serving as members of the Texas Guard or National Guard that are called to active duty are entitled to emergency leave with pay.  This leave will not be charged against the employee’s 15 days of military training or duty leave.

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION
All employees are covered by workers’ compensation insurance for injuries sustained during the performance of duty.  Texas A&M System is self-insured for worker’s compensation.   Compensation is based on the nature of the injury and the employee’s salary at the time of the injury.

TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS
As an employee of TAMU-SA, you may be eligible for tuition assistance after 90 days of employment.  The scholarship will pay up to the amount of six semester credit hours of eligible fees each term. 

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROVIDER (EAP) 
All employees are provided telephonic and in-person counseling services through Deer Oaks.

PARKING
Employees may purchase parking permits for the university for $60 a year. Parking permits must be purchased in the Business Office and are issued at the University Police Department. For further information – please visit the UPD website

PAYCHECKS AND DIRECT DEPOSIT
Paychecks for hourly paid employees are distributed bi-weekly, typically on Fridays.  Paychecks for all other employees are distributed at the beginning of the month.  Employees are encouraged to sign up for direct deposit at no charge.  

SOCIAL SECURITY
All employees are covered by Federal Social Security.  The employee’s share of the contribution is withheld by payroll deduction and is deposited with TAMU-SA’s share into the employee’s account.

RECREATIONAL AND WELLNESS SERVICES
TAMU-SA employees can use the gym located at Brooks City base Health & Wellness Center with a valid TAMU-SA Jaguar Pass.  Centro Fitness on Commercial Ave. offers 25% discount to TAMU-SA employees.  

CLERY ACT
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is a federal mandate requiring all institutions of higher education that participate in the federal student financial aid program to disclose information about crime on their campuses and in the surrounding communities.
