Overview of the J-1 Exchange Visitors

J-1 Exchange Visitor Program

The J-1 visa is a non-immigrant status designed to promote educational and cultural exchange between the U.S. and other nations. At Texas A&M-SA, we sponsor exchange visitors for full-time activities such as teaching, research, and interning.

 

1. J-1 Categories at A&M-SA

Hands-on experience for college students.

3 weeks to 12 months

Short-Term Scholar

Lecturing, training, or observing.

1 day to 6 months

Professor

Teaching and lecturing (may include research).

3 weeks to 5 years

Research Scholar

Research, observation, or consulting.

3 weeks to 5 years

 

2. Financial Support Requirements

You must provide evidence of funding in English and U.S. dollars. Personal funds cannot be the sole source unless your visit is under 3 months.

Monthly Minimums (Living Expenses):

  • J-1 Principal: $1,500/month
  • J-2 Spouse: $550/month
  • J-2 Child: $300/month (per child)

Acceptable Documents:

  • Bank statements/letters (dated within 6 months).
  • Official sponsorship letters from your home government or institution.
  • Signed letters of support from family members.

3. Mandatory Health Insurance

Federal regulations require you and your dependents to maintain insurance for the entire duration of your program.

Minimum Coverage Limits:

  • Major Medical: $100,000 per person
  • Medical Evacuation: $50,000 per person
  • Repatriation of Remains: $25,000 per person
  • Maximum Deductible: $500 per accident/illness
  • Policy Rating: Must be rated A- or above by A.M. Best or Standard & Poor’s.

4. Home Residency Requirement (212[e])

You may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement if:

  • You receive funding from a government agency or international organization.
  • Your field of study is on the "Exchange Visitor Skills List" for your home country.
  • Note: If subject, you must return home for two years before being eligible for H, L, or Permanent Resident status.

5. Entry and Arrival Procedures

U.S. Entry Checklist:

  1. Receive your Form DS-2019 from A&M-SA.
  2. Apply for the J-1 visa at a U.S. Embassy.
  3. Be prepared to demonstrate strong ties to your home country and English proficiency.
  4. Do not travel until the visa is granted.

Mandatory Check-In:

You must visit the Office of International Affairs immediately upon arrival in the U.S.

  • Required Documents: Original Passport, Form I-94, and approved Form DS-2019.
  • SEVIS Validation: We must validate your record in the SEVIS system. Failure to check in within 30 days of your start date will result in an automatic status violation and termination of your record.
