About the Master of Arts in English Program

The Master of Arts in English program fosters an intellectual community and provides students with new opportunities to hone reading, writing, and analytical skills and build expertise in a range of subject matters. The program offers seminars American/British Literature, Multi-Ethnic Literature, Composition & Rhetoric, Critical Theory, Gender Studies, and Visual Studies. Seminars are small and discussion-oriented.

Application Instructions

  1. Complete the GradCAS application
  2. Submit application fee ($49 for domestic; $69 for international)
  3. Submit the following required documents:
    • Official e-transcripts from all US institutions attended are to be sent to GradCAS through their online order portal. If your institution does not have official e-transcripts available, they can be mailed to the GradCAS processing center.

  4. Curriculum Vitae (preferred) or résumé
  5. Cover Letter (1-2 pages)
  6. Analytical writing sample (6-10 pages)
  7. 2 letters of recommendation (at least 1 from a former professor)

Prerequisites

  • 2.6 cumulative GPA
  • 18 CH of undergraduate coursework in English or a related discipline, including a minimum of 12 CH of advanced coursework (junior/senior level)
The Department has the right to examine students’ prerequisites, accept equivalent hours, or require additional work.

*Students falling below the GPA minimum are encouraged to apply. Students are evaluated holistically based on several criteria
