About the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, Bilingual Generalist (Grades 4-8) Program
Welcome to the Bilingual Education and ESL Programs at Texas A&M University-San Antonio! ¡Bienvenidos al Programa de la Educación Bilingüe/ESL en Texas A&M University-San Antonio!
The bilingual/ESL education faculty facilitates their students' advancement in the study of theories, research, and effective pedagogical approaches in the fields of bilingual, dual language, and ESL education. The faculty in the program has extensive knowledge in bilingual and ESL education and is actively involved in teaching, developing curriculum, service-learning partnerships, engaging in research initiatives, and participating in internal and external activities that support the university's commitment to leadership in our communities and the global world. The bilingual/ESL Education program is excited to offer the following programs to address the needs of Emergent Bilinguals in the classroom for future bilingual, dual language, and ESL educators.
Mission
The mission of the Bilingual Program is committed to preparing and inspiring critically conscious Bilingual and ESL professionals to achieve academic success, bilingual and bi-literate academic proficiency, and multicultural competency through critical reflection, experiential learning, and research-based practices.
Vision
The Bilingual Program promotes a learning environment for faculty and students to engage in exemplary teaching, praxis, and research. The program grows culturally responsive and sustaining educators who advocate for students, families, and communities.
Career Opportunities
Students will be able to teach content in two languages and bring two cultures to your classroom to work with Bilingual Learners. Bilingual teachers are highly needed, and career opportunities are in high demand. The bilingual teacher also receives a lucrative stipend (varies in school districts) in addition to the regular base teacher salary.
Faculty Highlights
Dr. Esther Garza is a Professor of Bilingual and ESL Education and Chair of the Department of Educator and Leadership Preparation at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA). She is the Principal Investigator for the ASAP2TEACH Department of Education Federal Grant, $1.5 million dollars, and is a Co-PI for a National Science Foundation Grant, and a Co-PI for a USDA federal grant preparing STEM Water Leaders and Educators. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Bilingual Education Research and Instruction.
Dr. Hsiaoping Wu is a Professor of Bilingual and ESL Education and is a Co-PI for the ASAP2TEACH Department of Education Federal Grant for $1.5 million dollars. She is also the lead faculty member for research in microcredential courses that prepare for ESL certification.
Dr. Myriam Jimena Guerra is an Associate Professor of Bilingual and ESL Education and is a Co-PI for the ASAP2TEACH Department of Education Federal Grant, $1.5 million dollars.
