Language, Literature, and Arts

Welcome to the Department of Language, Literature, and Arts! We are a multidisciplinary department comprising undergraduate and graduate programs in English and Spanish, including teacher certification programs, as well as a minor in Creative Arts and Performance Studies. 

Our programs engage students’ intellectual imaginations, providing opportunities to study and create in written, oral, visual, and musical modes. We are firmly rooted in San Antonio’s flourishing creative and cultural communities, offering particular emphasis on Latinx, Indigenous, and Black artistic, rhetorical, and intellectual traditions and centering diverse, multilingual approaches. In collaboration with community partners, we encourage students to apply their knowledge in public and professional contexts to make positive change in and beyond South Texas.

Students in the programs work closely with award-winning faculty who are dynamic teachers, engaged mentors, and leaders in their scholarly and creative fields. Students thus have opportunities to learn from and produce knowledge with professors in areas such as digital humanities, community narratives, Borderlands performance and rhetoric, comics and zines, professional writing, and teaching multilingual students. Because faculty are actively involved in their fields, they offer innovative courses such as Literacy in Latinx Communities, Beyoncé and Black Feminisms, Grant Writing, and Documentary Poetics.

Students who graduate with degrees in language, literature, and arts are prepared to thrive in a range of careers such as teaching, technical and professional writing, editing and publishing, translation and interpretation, and media, arts, and nonprofit work. Many students also pursue advanced studies in the arts and humanities or go on to law school or medical school.

¡Bienvenidos al Departamento de Lengua, Literatura y Artes! El departamento ofrece programas de pregrado y posgrado en inglés y en español, incluyendo programas de certificación de enseñanza para maestras/os. Además, el departamento ofrece una especialización en artes creativas y estudios de lo performativo (Creative Arts and Performance Studies). 

Nuestros programas estimulan la imaginación intelectual de los estudiantes, brindando oportunidades para estudiar and crear en modos escritos, orales, visuales y musicales. Estamos firmemente arraigados en las florecientes comunidades creativas y culturales de San Antonio. Ofrecemos un énfasis particular en las tradiciones artísticas, retóricas e intelectuales latinas, indígenas y negras y centramos enfoques diversos y multilingües. En colaboración con la comunidad, alentamos a los estudiantes a utilizar su conocimiento en contextos públicos y profesionales que permitan un cambio social positivo dentro y fuera del sur de Texas.

Los estudiantes en los programas trabajan en colaboración con profesores galardonados que son maestros dinámicos, mentores comprometidos y líderes en sus disciplinas académicas y creativas. The department offers undergraduate programs in English and Spanish, a Master of Arts in English, and minors in English, Spanish, and Creative Arts and Performance Studies. Programs explore literature, language, writing, culture and creative expression.

Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Literature Emphasis concentration, a Writing, Media, and Culture concentration, or a Teacher Certification pathway. A minor in English is also available. Visit the English program page to compare options.

The Spanish program offers a Bachelor of Arts, a minor and a teacher-certification pathway. Coursework includes Spanish language, grammar, composition, literature, film and cultural studies, with language courses ranging from introductory to advanced levels.

Yes. The department offers Bachelor of Arts pathways with Teacher Certification in English and Spanish. Consult the selected program’s degree plan and a program advisor about coursework, educator preparation and certification requirements.

The interdisciplinary Creative Arts and Performance Studies minor brings together visual art, music, theatre and creative writing. It emphasizes creative practice, public art and arts administration. The minor complements a bachelor’s degree.

Yes. Department programs provide opportunities for community-based, digital and multimedia projects. Students may work with faculty in areas such as digital humanities, community narratives, professional writing and performance. Available opportunities vary by course and program.

Depending on their program and additional qualifications, graduates may pursue teaching, professional and technical writing, editing, publishing, translation, interpretation, media, arts administration or nonprofit work. Programs also provide preparation for graduate and professional study.

The Writing, Language, and Digital Composing Center supports students across courses with writing, reading, presentations, Spanish coursework and digital projects. Students can schedule in-person, live online or written-feedback appointments through JagWire.
