Academic coaches work with students individually to identify any obstacles that may hinder their academic success. They create personalized systems to help students achieve their academic and personal goals and develop tailored plans for academic success and lifelong achievement.
Services academic coaches provide:
- Time Management
- Note-Taking Tips
- Study Skills
- Test-Taking Strategies
- Reading Comprehension
- Procrastination/Motivation
- Goal Setting
- Campus, Community, and Online Resources
- Campus and Community Referral
A&M SA students are strongly encouraged to use academic coaching services, especially if they need help with coursework or want to strengthen their study strategies and tools.
Academic coaching is a voluntary and free service available to all A&M SA students.
Students with an institutional GPA below 2.0 must meet with a coach each semester until their GPA returns to 2.0. In these cases, students will receive notifications via their Jaguar email to begin participating in the academic recovery program, LEAP, which helps students return to good academic standing.
Academic Coaching Appointments
How do Academic Coaching Appointments Work?
- Your first appointment will focus on assessing your academic needs. You and your coach will create a success plan with realistic, attainable goals. Appointments typically last 45 minutes.
- You may meet once or regularly throughout the semester, depending on your success plan and academic needs.
- Additional study skills resources, success plans, and referrals to other student success offices may be provided to support your journey to graduation.
Walk-in Appointments:
- The goal of the walk-in is to assess your current situation and immediate questions. We’ll use this time to set up an appointment soon after to discuss a success plan.
- Walk-Ins are typically 20 minutes long and occur typically during peak registration.
To schedule an appointment with an academic coach, you can call the Student Success Center at 210-784-1307, email student.success@tamusa.edu, or schedule through Jagwire.

Q&A
Can academic coaches help me select and register for courses?
No, academic coaches don't help with course selection or registration. They can help you find your Degree Works account, see which courses you need, and learn how to use it. For help exploring or choosing courses and registering, please schedule an appointment with your academic advisor.
Can an academic coach help me with my SAP Appeal?
What steps can I take if I’m not comfortable with my assigned academic coach? Is it possible to request a different one?
Yes, you can. It’s important that you feel comfortable and supported by your coaching team. If you don't feel your current coach is a good fit for your academic needs, email student.success@tamusa.edu to request a different coach.
Do I have to meet with an academic coach?
You are encouraged, but not required, to meet with an academic coach at A&M SA. However, if you are on Scholastic Probation or returning from Academic Dismissal, you must meet with an academic coach each semester until you achieve good standing, which means maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
What if I need to cancel my coaching appointment?
How often can I meet with my academic coach?
Academic coaches support students from their first year through graduation, gradually encouraging independence. You can meet with your academic coach as often as needed. However, please keep in mind that coaches have large caseloads and must balance appointments to serve the wider student community.
