Founding President of Texas A&M University–San Antonio

Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier served as the founding president of Texas A&M University–San Antonio and guided the institution through its early development as an independent university. A San Antonio native and longtime advocate for educational access, Dr. Ferrier earned degrees from St. Philip’s College and Texas A&M University, including a Ph.D. focused on education administration.

During her presidency, Dr. Ferrier helped establish the university’s foundation, advanced its growth within the Texas A&M University System, strengthened community partnerships, and supported the transition from a developing campus into a growing higher education institution serving South San Antonio.

2014–2022 | Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson

Second President of Texas A&M University–San Antonio

Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson served as the second president of Texas A&M University–San Antonio, leading the university through a period of significant growth and transformation. A San Antonio native as well, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Management from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from California State University, Fresno.

During her tenure, A&M-San Antonio expanded into a comprehensive four-year university, welcomed its first freshman class, strengthened academic programs, developed new student success initiatives, and advanced partnerships supporting workforce development, research, and regional needs. Her leadership helped the university achieve Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) status and expand its impact across South Texas.

2023–Present | Dr. Salvador Hector Ochoa

Third President of Texas A&M University–San Antonio

Dr. Salvador Hector Ochoa serves as the third president of Texas A&M University–San Antonio. A South Texas native, Dr. Ochoa earned his Ph.D. in School Psychology from Texas A&M University in 1989 and brings more than three decades of higher education experience as a faculty member and administrator.

As president, Dr. Ochoa continues advancing the university’s mission through academic excellence, student success initiatives, innovation, and strategic growth. His leadership focuses on expanding opportunities for students, creating a destination campus and building upon A&M-San
