Steps to Study Abroad

Steps to Study Abroad

Step 1 - Express your interest

Begin by contacting the Office of International Affairs (OIA) to learn more about study abroad opportunities. Our team can help you explore available programs, answer questions, and identify options that align with your personal goals.

Step 2 - Explore Program Options

Review the study abroad opportunities available through Texas A&M University–San Antonio. Students may choose from:

  • Faculty-Led Programs offered by TAMUSA faculty
  • Provider Programs offered through approved study abroad partners

Once you have identified a program of interest, follow the appropriate pathway below.

A. Faculty-Led Programs

Step 3A - Connect with the Faculty Leader

If you are interested in a faculty-led program, contact the faculty member leading the program. The faculty leader will provide information about program requirements, deadlines, coursework, and next steps.

Step 4A - Complete Program Requirements

Follow the instructions provided by the faculty leader and the Office of International Affairs. Additional forms, orientations, and travel requirements may apply depending on the program.

Final Steps to All Study Abroad Participants - Complete Pre-Departure Requirements

Once your participation has been approved, the Office of International Affairs will provide guidance on the remaining requirements. Depending on your program, these may include:

  • Submitting an Emergency Contact Form
  • Enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
  • Reviewing CDC travel guidance for your destination
  • Reviewing applicable travel advisories
  • Providing proof of CISI international health insurance
  • Completing additional required documentation
  • Attending any required pre-departure meetings or orientations

Students are responsible for completing all required steps prior to departure.

B. Provider Programs

Step 3B - Select a Program and Complete the Course Approval Form

After identifying a provider program, complete the Course Approval Form and meet with your academic advisor.

Your academic advisor must:

  • Review the courses you plan to take abroad
  • Determine how credits may apply toward your degree plan
  • Confirm whether the program aligns with your academic requirements

Step 4B - Obtain Advisor Approval

If the proposed courses are approved, your academic advisor will complete the advisor portion of the Course Approval Form.

Submit the completed form to the Office of International Affairs for review.

Step 5B - Apply to You Chosen Program

Once your Course Approval Form has been reviewed and approved, you may submit an application directly to your selected study abroad provider.
