Faculty
Texas A&M University–San Antonio encourages faculty to develop study abroad opportunities that support the university’s academic mission and provide students with international learning experiences.
The Office of International Affairs (OIA) works with faculty to develop, review, and implement study abroad courses.
Faculty Eligibility:
The following faculty members may be eligible to lead a study abroad program:
-
Full-time professional or instructional-track faculty
-
Tenure-track and tenured faculty
-
Retired or emeritus faculty who continue teaching part-time, with approval from their Department Chair or Dean
-
Full-time adjunct faculty with appropriate academic credentials, with approval from their Department Chair or Dean
All faculty proposals must receive departmental and college support before final approval.
Developing a Study Abroad Course:
Planning a study abroad program begins with the faculty member in coordination with their Department Chair and College leadership.
Faculty interested in leading a program must submit a proposal to the Office of International Affairs for review.
A proposal typically includes:
-
Course syllabus
-
Learning objectives and outcomes
-
Draft itinerary
-
Program budget
-
Department Chair or Dean recommendation
After review by the Office of International Affairs, proposals are forwarded to the Office of the Provost for final approval. Once approved, the course may be promoted and made available to students.
Faculty are encouraged to meet with the Office of International Affairs early in the planning process to discuss program ideas, logistics, and timelines.
Faculty Responsibilities:
Leading a study abroad program requires a commitment beyond the traditional classroom role. Faculty leaders are responsible for supporting students both academically and logistically throughout the program.
Responsibilities may include:
-
Instructor – Developing course content and evaluating student performance
-
Program Leader – Supervising students and ensuring the program operates smoothly
-
Recruiter – Promoting the course and meeting with interested students
-
Mentor – Supporting students throughout the international experience
-
Program Coordinator – Working with the Office of International Affairs and program partners to manage logistics
Faculty leaders are expected to remain available to students and maintain a safe and productive learning environment throughout the program.
