TU Instructor FAQ and Resources

Frequently Asked Questions for Instructors

Who are my TU students, and can I receive a list?

Contact the TU team to confirm which students in your class participate in the program and request the appropriate course-specific information.

Do TU students have DSS accommodations if nothing appears in my portal?

TU participation alone does not indicate which accommodations a student has been approved to use. Disability Support Services (DSS) uses AIM to manage accommodation requests and Faculty Notification Letters.

Check the AIM Instructor Portal and contact disability.services@tamusa.edu if a letter is missing or unclear. Coordinate with TU about program support as well.

Do TU students receive grades, and how should I assess their work?

TU’s public FAQ states that students courses are audited. Its executive summary describes individualized learning and flexible assessment, such as portfolios and presentations. TU Students will have modified syllabi to align with their ILPs.

What learning goals should guide a TU student’s participation in my course?

TU uses person-centered planning and an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP). Work with the student and TU team to identify goals connected to your course and meaningful opportunities to practice and demonstrate those skills.

Should TU students complete the same assignments as other students?

Begin with the student’s learning goals and the purpose of the assignment. Discuss expectations with TU and the student, and follow applicable DSS accommodation guidance.

Depending on the agreed learning plan, an alternative way to demonstrate learning may be appropriate. Confirm expectations rather than assuming the same approach applies to every TU student.

How can I make course materials and directions easier to access?

Use clear directions, divide longer tasks into manageable steps, and provide examples. Offer accessible materials and more than one way to engage with content when practical.

These practices support TU’s Universal Design for Learning approach. Individual DSS accommodations must also be addressed.

What role do success coaches or peer mentors have?

Success coaches and peer mentors are part of TU’s support model. Contact the TU team to find out whether a coach or mentor will support the student in your course and clarify their role, attendance, and communication arrangements.

Can TU students use assistive technology or AI tools for coursework?

TU’s expansion plan includes assistive technology and AI to support access and learning. Before a tool is used, clarify its purpose with the student and TU team. Consult DSS when the tool relates to an accommodation and discuss course expectations for AI use.

What should I do if a student struggles with participation, attendance, or assignments?

Speak with the student about the difficulty and contact the TU team to coordinate support. Share specific observations and discuss practical next steps connected to the student’s goals. Include DSS when an accommodation question is involved.
