Frequently Asked Questions

Who can utilize SCC services?

SCC services are available to currently enrolled Texas A&M University-San Antonio students —undergraduate and graduate.

Do I need to pay out-of-pocket for SCC services?

No, SCC Services are already covered for by your University Services Fee (USF). The only additional cost
you may be charged is a $10 no-show or late cancellation fee. The fee is only charged if you do not cancel
your appointment within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment. Fees are paid in the Student Business
Services office or though Jagwire.

When should I consider SCC services?

Anyone can benefit from services at any time in their lives as a student. Some common concerns we
address:
  • Stress
  • Life changes
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Sexual identity & gender concerns
  • Cultural issues
  • Low motivation
  • Low self-esteem/self-confidence
  • Substance misuse
  • Grief/loss
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

What should I expect at my initial appointment?

All initial appointments for new and returning clients occur in person. We ask that students bring their
student ID card to every appointment. Students may be asked to stow large items in a locker upon arrival for safekeeping. At the beginning of the appointment, clients will complete intake paperwork in the lobby when they arrive and wait for their assigned mental health clinician to begin the consultation session. After the initial appointment, the mental health clinician will render a clinical recommendation based on services that are best suited to meet individual needs.

Are virtual appointments offered?

After an in-person initial consultation appointment, clients may request telecounseling/virtual appointments with their counselor when scheduling their next session.

Any student (even those that are not clients) may reserve the SCC Quiet Room for private space to conduct virtual appointments. Learn more about the Quiet Room on the Mental Health Services page.

Does the SCC take walk-ins?

The SCC does not take walk-ins, but we schedule same-day crisis appointments depending on an incoming student's need for immediate support.
