Reaching out for mental health support can be a great option to assist in your journey as a JaguarThe Student Counseling Center is here to make the process as comfortable and helpful as possible.  All initial appointments are conducted in-person in Madla 120. Telehealth is available for ongoing appointments upon request.  

Please read through the following appointment options to determine what would best meet your needs and follow the steps to schedule:

Scheduling Options

Crisis Appointment – Are you experiencing a mental health crisis and in need of an immediate appointment with a clinician?

Call us now at 210-784-1331 or walk-in to the SCC in Madla 120 if any of the following are currently true:  
  • In the past two weeks I have had thoughts of ending my life AND considered acting on them.  
  • I am in immediate danger of harming or killing someone else.  
  • I am seeking services because of a recent physical and/or sexual assault. 
  • I am hearing and/or seeing things that others around me do not hear or see. 
  • I am in immediate need of emotional support because someone close to you recently died.
*Please note that crisis appointments cannot be scheduled online.  These appointments are scheduled through the phone or in person to ensure you get the support you need as soon as possible.   

Initial Consultation – Are you interested in ongoing counseling services or unsure of what services you need?

Initial Consultation appointments are the most common type of appointments for students first seeking counseling center services. Various services may be recommended and scheduled including brief individual, group, or case management. Or you may be referred to an appropriate campus or community resource. Students experiencing the problems below can benefit from an initial consultation appointment:   
  • I am experiencing anxiety and/or stress. 
  • I feel depressed and/or have low mood/energy. 
  • I am concerned about my alcohol and/or drug use. 
  • I am having difficulty adjusting to a recent change. 
  • I am having a relationship problem. 
  • I am unsure about something significant in my future. 
  • I need to make a major decision and need feedback. 
You can schedule an initial consultation online, by phone, or in-person.  
  • To schedule online (for new client appointments only): click here (portal to schedule is available M-F from 7 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.) 
    • If you are currently in crisis (experiencing serious thoughts of suicide or of harming others), please call us at 210-784-1331 instead of scheduling through the online portal so we can provide immediate support. Ongoing clients must schedule by phone or in person.

Case Management – Are you in need of a referral for a community resource?

Case Management appointments can assist students with the following:  
  • I am requesting referrals in the community (counseling, medical care, financial assistance, etc.) 
  • I am seeking a referral for medication management for my mental health.  
  • I need assistance finding counseling support elsewhere. 
Case management appointments can be scheduled online, by phone, or in-person.

Who can utilize SCC services?

SCC services are available to currently enrolled Texas A&M University-San Antonio students - undergraduate and graduate.

When should I consider SCC Services?

Anyone can benefit from services at any time in their lives as a student. Some common concerns we address: 
  • Stress 
  • Life changes 
  • Relationship difficulties 
  • Sexual identity & gender concerns 
  • Cultural issues 
  • Low motivation 
  • Low self-esteem/self-confidence 
  • Substance misuse 
  • Grief/loss 
  • Anxiety 
  • Depression 

What should I expect at my initial appointment?

All initial appointments for new and returning clients occur in person. We ask that students bring their student ID card to every appointment. Students may be asked to stow large items in a locker upon arrival for safekeeping. At the beginning of the appointment, clients will complete intake paperwork in the lobby when they arrive and wait for their assigned mental health clinician to begin the consultation session.  After the initial appointment, the mental health clinician will render a clinical recommendation based on services that are best suited to meet individual needs. 

Do I need to pay out-of-pocket for SCC services?

No, SCC Services are already covered for by your University Services Fee (USF). The only additional cost you may be charged is a $10 no-show or late cancellation fee.  The fee is only charged if you do not cancel your appointment within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment. Fees are paid in the Student Business Services office or though Jagwire. 

Does the SCC take walk-ins?

The SCC does not take walk-ins, but we can schedule same-day crisis appointments depending on an incoming student’s need for immediate support.  

Will faculty, my parents, or my classmates know I'm using SCC services?

For students 18 and older, our services are confidential, except in life-threatening emergencies or unless federal, state, or local law(s) are required If you would like the SCC to share relevant information with another party, you must sign a release of information beforehand. Please review our Notice of Privacy Practices.

What services are available when the SCC is closed?

The SCC provides 24/7/365 access to licensed, professional counseling at 210-784-1331 – even during evenings, weekends, and holidays. Please listen to the options provided over the phone. 

Any enrolled student has access to 24/7 virtual counseling through the TELUS Student Support App and website. Learn more on the TELUS page.

For any on-campus emergencies, contact the University Police Department at 210-784-1911 or call 911 immediately.  For more emergency resources, please see the Crisis Support page.

Are virtual appointments offered?

After an in-person initial consultation appointment, clients may request telecounseling/virtual appointments with their counselor when scheduling their next session. 

Any student (even those that are not clients) may reserve the SCC Quiet Room for private space to conduct virtual appointments. Learn more about the Quiet Room on the Mental Health Services page.
