Benefits 101

Benefit Vocabulary

COE

  • A letter from the VA that states the student's eligibility to use specific federal benefits.

DD-214

  • The Veteran's discharge papers they receive once they leave the military.

TVC Database

  • Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) uses a database that keeps track of used Hazlewood hours.

MHA

  • Monthly Housing Allowance is a monthly stipend that will go directly to the student's bank account.

Book Stipend

  • Money given to Chapter 33 students only for books and supplies.

Face-to-Face requirement

  • For Chapter 33 students, they must have at least one in-person class to receive their full stipend.

NOBE

  • Notice of Basic Eligibility; students wanting to use 1606 must get this document from their education officer.

Things to Know

FERPA

  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974; was implemented to protect the student's academic and personal information. In order for our office to discuss a student's records with anyone other than the student, you must have a FERPA form on file submitted through your Jagwire portal.
Census Date
  • Last day for students to drop a class with no penalty

SAP Appeal

  • Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal is completed by Hazlewood students when they have failed to maintain their minimum GPA requirement or will exceed 150 attempted credit hours.

Payment Deadline

  • The Student Business Services sets the payment deadline for the university. As long as we have the students' tuition paying benefit request before the deadline, then they should be saved from the drop for non-payment.

Rounding Out

  • The VA allows “rounding out,” which lets a school certify extra courses—outside of a student’s approved program—during their final academic term. This helps increase training time so non–Chapter 33 students can get full-time benefit payments, and Chapter 33 students can receive the maximum housing allowance (MHA). Rounding out can only be used once per program.
