What is Hazlewood?
The Hazlewood Act Exemption is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption. This waives tuition and most fees (does not cover the Student Service Fee, Housing and Meal Plans, etc.), at public institutions of higher education in Texas.

Please note this benefit cannot be used for the 11-month MBA program.
Hazlewood Qualifications
DD214 Requirements:
- Must have Texas as "Home of Record" or "Place of Entry".
- Must have at least 181 days of active duty service (excluding training).
- Must have a discharge status of Honorable or General Under Honorable Conditions.
The Student:
- Must be a Texas resident
- Have no federal veterans education benefits dedicated to the payment of tuition and fees (such as Post 9/11 or VR&E).
- Cannot be in default on a loan that is made or guaranteed by the state of Texas.
- Must be enrolled in a Tax Supported Program. (11-Month MBA Program is not supported)
- Must meet University Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy. (As determined by the institutions financial aid policy and undergraduate students cannot be considered to have attempted an excessive number of credit hours)
Tiers of Hazlewood
Hazlewood Veteran
Used by Veterans only:
- Veteran has 150 hazlewood credit hours
- If the veteran has a disability rating of less than 100% total and permanent, they will have to share their hours with any other dependent(s)
- If the veteran has a disability rating of 100% total and permanent, they will have their own 150 Hazlewood hours and will not have to share.
- If the veteran has a disability rating of less than 100% total and permanent, they will have to share their hours with any other dependent(s)
Hazlewood Legacy (Child)
Used by Dependent Children only:
- Veteran does not have a disability rating or is less than 100% total and permanent disabled.
- Student and veteran must both be classified as a Texas resident.
- Student must be 25 years old or younger on the first day of the term.
- 150 Hazlewood hours shared between the veteran and any other dependents.
- Only one person can use the benefit at a time (i.e. two students cannot use the benefit in the same semester).
Hazlewood Spouse / Dependent
Used by Dependent Children or Spouse only:
- Veteran is 100% totally and permanently disabled, KIA, or MIA.
- No age out.
- Veteran, Spouse, and Dependents each have their own 150 Hazlewood hours.
- Do not have to share.
- Commonly used with Chapter 35

Getting started
Once you have registered for courses and have gathered all of your required documents, you will need to submit a "Benefit Request". This form can be found on your Jagwire portal. Here is what you will need to do:
- Once logged in, click the Military Affairs tile on the bottom of the home screen.
- Select "Submit benefit request" to open the form
- Follow the questions until you get to the document upload page.
Be sure to submit a benefit request every semester after registering.

SAP Appeal
If extenuating circumstances exist which prevented you from maintaining minimum SAP requirements, you have the ability to appeal to continue using your Hazlewood benefit. Students utilizing Financial Aid, please refer to their office for the SAP Appeals process. If you are not utilizing Student Financial Aid, please submit your Hazlewood SAP Appeal through your Jagwire student portal. In the meantime, we strongly encourage you to setting up payment arrangements with Student Business Services to prevent your courses from being dropped for non-payment.

Please note that the documents required for your SAP Appeal will vary depending on the reason for your appeal.
Medical Circumstances
Required Attached Documentation:
- Personal Letter: A detailed explanation of the event(s) with appropriate reference to specific dates and/ or time periods. Your Personal Letter must also indicate what actions or steps you have taken or plan to take to prevent repetitive failure of SAP policies.
- Supporting Medical Documentation: (e.g. doctor or hospital bills, insurance benefit statements, letter from healthcare provider.)
Personal Circumstances
Required Attached Documentation:
- Personal Letter: A detailed explanation of the event(s) with appropriate reference to specific dates and/ or time periods. Your Personal Letter must also indicate what actions or steps you have taken or plan to take to prevent repetitive failure of SAP policies.
- Supporting Personal Documentation: (e.g. death/birth certificates, letter from other party who can attest to your statements, professional/ pastoral counselor reference letter, medical professional reference letter, official or legal documents such as police reports, attorney statements.)
Excessive Attempted Hours
Required Attached Documentation:
- Personal Letter: A detailed explanation of the event(s) with appropriate reference to specific dates and/ or time periods. Your Personal Letter must also indicate what actions or steps you have taken or plan to take to prevent repetitive failure of SAP policies.
- Written Explanation from Academic Advisor: Explanation of reason for requiring excess hours is required from your academic advisor. This statement should also indicate the required number of hours remaining for completion of your degree.
- Satisfactory Academic Progress Plan: Students can get these from their Academic Advisor.
