Benefit Information

VA education benefits help Veterans, service members, and their qualified family members with needs like paying college tuition, finding the right school or training program, and getting career counseling. Learn how to apply for and manage the education and training benefits you've earned by visiting the VA's webpage at va.gov.

The Department of Defense (DoD) provides financial assistance to Service members through their Tuition Assistance (TA) program for voluntary off-duty education programs in support of professional and personal self-development goals.

Chapter 30 - Montgomery GI Bill

The Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (MGIB-AD) provides education and training benefits to Veterans who have served at least two years on active duty. This program can help cover the costs of college, technical, or vocational education programs. This benefit is a monthly stipend that is paid directly to the student, and does not directly pay tuition and fees.

Chapter 31 - Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E)

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E), also known as Chapter 31, is designed to support Veterans with service-connected disabilities that impact their ability to work. This is an employment program that often contains educational components, however is not a ensured benefit. This program helps you explore career options and access the education or training you need to succeed.

Chapter 33 - Post 9/11 GI Bill®

The Post-9/11 GI Bill®, also known as Chapter 33, provides education and training benefits to Veterans who have served on active duty after September 10, 2001. This program can help pay for school or cover costs while you’re training for a new career.

Fry Scholarship

The Fry Scholarship provides education benefits to the children and spouses of service members who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001. Eligible recipients may receive full in-state tuition, a monthly housing allowance, and other support to help cover education costs.

Chapter 35 - Dependents Educational Assistance

Chapter 35, also known as the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program, offers education and training benefits to eligible dependents of certain Veterans and service members. If you are the child or spouse of a Veteran who is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition. If the Veteran has died, is missing in action, or was captured in the line of duty, you may also qualify for this support. This benefit is a monthly stipend that is paid directly to the student.

1606 - Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserves (MGIB-SR)

The Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) provides up to 36 months of education and training benefits for eligible members of the Reserve and National Guard. If you’re currently serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard Reserve, or in the Army or Air National Guard, you may qualify for this program.

Tuition Assistance (TA)

The Department of Defense (DOD) Federal Tuition Assistance Program (TA) provides financial assistance to current service members for education programs. TA is available for courses offered in the classroom or by distance learning as long as they are part of an approved academic degree program.

Tuition assistance will not cover the following expenses:

  • Books and course materials
  • Flight training fees
  • Taking the same course twice
  • Continuing education units, or CEUs

How to use TA

 Obtain approval for education services officer, military counselor, or service prior to enrolling

  • Find an education office near you
Register for courses at A&M-SA
  • Army – log into Warrior Web/Veteran Affairs Tab, and complete the ArmyIgnitED Enrollment request. Allow 24-48 hours before logging into ArmyIgnitED to request course TA.
  • Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard – Attach a copy of your approved TA authorization form to your benefit request.
